Cross River State Gov. Bassey Otu warned kidnappers Wednesday to stop kidnapping state residents.
“Enough is enough,” the governor said.
Otu issued the warning in Calabar after swearing in 31 commissioners in the state.
The governor, who has ordered law enforcement agencies to arrest and prosecute criminals in accordance with existing state laws, announced a reward for any useful information that could curb kidnappings in the state.
He said in his pursuit of illicit wealth; criminals have resorted to kidnapping and other crimes alien to the culture of the State.
“I have directed all security agencies to use all resources at their disposal to ensure that this threat is stopped immediately and that all hostages are released and reunited with their families.
“It is quite sad that instead of entering into the development strategy of the new administration in the form of amnesty, few criminal elements have resorted to generating income while holding a gun to our heads.
“These criminals have suddenly turned our once peaceful state into a pariah for tourists, investors and even ordinary people; we must put an end to this inhumane treatment by criminal elements.
“Let me state unequivocally that enough is enough; this must stop not tomorrow but today; my administration stands ready to enforce the letter of the law to stop criminal activities,” stated Mr. Otu.
Speaking further, the governor said that the state’s security architecture was now better positioned and would henceforth be ruthless towards criminals.
He advised residents not to let the country’s economic difficulties push them to commit crimes.
He Cross River State Government was working hard to provide palliatives to residents to cushion the negative impact of the removal of the fuel subsidy, Otu said.
On 13 July, armed men abducted Ekanem Ephraim, a professor and neurologist at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.
State doctors have withdrawn their services in protest of the kidnapping of the professor.
