On Friday, a memorial walk was organized to commemorate the Lekki Tollgate shooting during the 2020 #EndSARS nationwide protests.

The walk was to mark the second memorial of the Lekki shooting that took place at the toll gate and to honor those who lost their lives due to police and military brutality that took place on October 20, 2020.

Nigerian sketch maker Adebowale Adedayo, also known as ‘Mr. Macaroni’, along with dozens of young Nigerians, stormed the streets of Lagos in a solidarity walk to commemorate the third Lekki shooting memorial.

Strong police presence

Speaking to journalists at the toll gate, Owohunwa said police officers were deployed to the area to secure Lagos and prevent a breach of public order.

“So far, as you can see, the deployment is punctual and in accordance with the order, all the police in the comments have been very civilized, professional, and respectful of the rights and space of both the protesters and citizens in general”, said.

“So I think, as a police commissioner, I am very, very impressed and I commend their sacrifice and their efforts while encouraging them to keep them in the public interest.

“In exercising their rights (referring to the #EndSARS protesters), we will ensure that the group is not exposed to any kind of danger. That’s what we’re doing here and that’s what we’ve done.

“We also decided that in the general public interest, we also do not allow a situation where those groups behave in a manner that violates security and peace in Lekki and other parts of Lagos.”
