The devastating effects of the Nigerian Civil War on the Igbo people of the Southeast were recently discussed on social media by seasoned Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo. He claimed that no other ethnic group in Nigeria could have gone through what the Igbos went through, adding that at the time, he had to eat lizards to survive.
After Professor Usman Yusuf questioned Igbos’ silence about the current economic suffering and suggested President Bola Tinubu look into the matter, Kanayo responded on Instagram with these revelations.
Igbos don’t speak up about these issues, according to Kanayo, since they’ve learned from Nigeria’s past that doing so makes them targets.
Giving more details, Kanayo disclosed:
“What the Igbos endured during the battle is beyond the strength of any tribe. I used to describe the wartime experiences of the Igbo people to my brothers. I must share my own experience with you. During the war, there were no chickens anywhere, so I ate lizards. When we spot a lizard, we will follow it for three or four kilometres until we catch it and consume its delicious meat.”
Recalling that hunger knows no boundaries of tribe or religion, the renowned actor counselled Igbos against participating in economic protests with other groups.
A sobering first-hand description of the tremendous deprivation experienced by Igbos during the civil war was given by Kanayo.When voicing his disapproval of the state of the economy in public, he recommended that the Southeast proceed cautiously.
