In his inaugural speech at the United Nations General Assembly, Bola Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief and President of Nigeria, spoke on behalf of his country and Africa as a whole. Focusing on this year’s theme, he emphasized several key points that were important to him.

One of the main issues he addressed was Nigeria’s national security. Tinubu expressed concern about foreign actors who are working with local criminals to recruit people into bondage for illegal extraction of gold and other resources. This is leading to the diversion of billions of dollars that could be used for national development towards violent enterprises, which could threaten peace and national security if left unchecked.

Illegal mining is prevalent in many Nigerian states, including Zamfara, Osun, and Plateau. Foreign companies, often Chinese, are conspiring with local leaders and sometimes armed groups to take control of large tracts of mineral-filled land, according to newslodge.

Tinubu also highlighted his plans to deal with armed groups, including disbanding extremist groups on Nigeria’s territory. He expressed his willingness to negotiate with military leaders in Niger, where a recent coup ousted President Mohamed Bazoum. As President of ECOWAS, he seeks to restore democratic governance in a way that addresses political and economic challenges facing the nation, including violent extremists who seek to foment instability in the region.

The President also drew attention to the inhumane trade that has developed in the region amid the ongoing battle against violent extremists. Tinubu discussed the challenges that other African states are facing, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has suffered for decades despite the strong UN presence there.

Tinubu concluded his speech by characterizing Africa as the key to the future of the world. He emphasized that Africa should not be viewed as a problem to be avoided or pitied.

This was Tinubu’s first participation in the annual UN General Assembly, having been sworn in as President of Nigeria on May 29.
