According to PUNCH, former House of Representatives member who represented the Ika Federal Constituency of Delta State, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, tragically passed away while watching the Nigeria vs. South Africa AFCON semifinal match on Wednesday.
According to a source close to the deceased, the incident occurred when a penalty was awarded against Nigeria, leading to Dr. Ojougboh shouting and subsequently suffering a massive heart attack. He said that the former lawmaker eventually slumped and died when South Africa converted the spot kick.
The source said,
“The incident happened when the penalty was awarded against Nigeria. Dr. Ojougboh was said to have shouted and slumped due to a massive heart attack when SA (South Africa) scored.”
Nigeria’s Super Eagles won a dramatic penalty shootout over South Africa on Wednesday, advancing to their first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final since 2013.
After a lacklustre first half, William Troost-Ekong scored from the spot after Victor Osimhen was taken down.
On 86 minutes, the Super Eagles thought they had increased their lead in the final moments of regulation time when Osimhen blasted home, but a VAR review not only ruled out the goal but also awarded South Africa a penalty after Alhassan Yusuf fouled Percy Tau inside the area.
Teboho Mokoena levelled from the spot, but the Super Eagles of Nigeria held on to win the match in penalty shootouts to advance to the finals.
