Anambra State Police Commissioner Aderemi Adeoye has warned cult patrons not to ask him to release any cultists arrested in the state or risk disgrace.
State police spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga revealed this in a statement on Friday.
Ikenga, deputy superintendent of police, said the commissioner described those who patronize cultists to kill other people as “cowards who should cover their faces in shame.”
The police spokesman said the commissioner has vowed to clamp down on cultists terrorizing residents of Awka, the state capital.
Adeoye has ordered an attack on the cultists and their patrons in the state, he said.
The police commissioner also promised that the state police “will be very tough on rogue cultists” who enjoy killing others.
He assured residents of Anambra State that peace and tranquility, which had recently escaped them due to recent cult-related killings in the state capital, would soon be restored.
The police chief asked for the residents’ cooperation in efforts to drive the cultists out of the state.
Background
For some time there have been frequent attacks related to sects in Anambra State, especially in Awka.
In July, for example, suspected cultists beheaded a member of a rival sect leader in the Eke Awka market in the South Awka State local government area.
In early January, at least five people were killed in separate sect-related attacks in the communities of Okpuno, Awka South and Obosi in the local government areas of Idemili North state.
In addition, suspected sectarians killed six people in November 2022 in another clash between sectarians in Awka, the state capital.
