Maintaining good respiratory and lung health requires a diet high in nutrients. Certain nutrients, such as omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins A, C, and E, are essential for lung health and reduce the risk of respiratory problems. Vitamin-A-rich foods, including leafy greens, sweet potatoes, and carrots, help keep the respiratory tract lining intact, reducing the risk of infection.

Vitamin C strengthens the immune system and reduces airway inflammation. It is found in citrus fruits, strawberries, and bell peppers. Vitamin E, abundant in nuts, seeds, and avocados, acts as an antioxidant to protect lung tissues from oxidative damage caused by harmful chemicals. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in walnuts, flaxseeds, and fatty fish, have anti-inflammatory properties that may improve lung function and reduce the severity of respiratory diseases like COPD and asthma.

In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Hari Kishan Gonuguntla, a consultant interventional pulmonologist and critical care specialist at Yashoda Hospitals in Hyderabad, discussed dietary practices for strong lungs and promoting respiratory health naturally.

Dr. Hari emphasized that “lifestyle modifications, including a nutrient-rich diet, play an important role in improving lung health. People with pre-existing lung diseases require more calories compared to those with normal health.”

Consumption of anti-oxidant-rich and anti-inflammatory substances like green leafy vegetables, green tea, fruits like berries and apples, spices like pepper and turmeric, and substances with flavonoid antioxidants like cocoa are recommended.

Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like fish, walnuts, flax seeds, etc., help maintain a good level of antioxidants, which maintain good lung health.

Consumption of antioxidants also helps protect against lung malignancies.

A 2019 study on 105 asthma patients demonstrated that regular consumption of tomatoes was associated with good asthma control and a slower decline in lung function in smokers.

Carotene is an antioxidant that may help prevent lung cancer-causing effects. Carotene is especially abundant in orange or red vegetables. Carrots are a great choice that can help protect your lungs.

Studies have also shown that low fiber intake is associated with reduced measures of lung function. A high-fiber diet rich in whole grains is recommended for lung health.

At last, Dr. Hari said, “Thus, a balanced, healthy diet along with the avoidance of smoking exposure helps in improving lung health.”
