Despite legal cases from former President Donald Trump, he still has solid support from most Republican Party supporters, according to the Marist Poll.
“Most Republicans (78 percent) and 49 percent of independents say he should stay in the race.
“Many Republicans are unfazed by former President Donald Trump’s legal troubles. While most Americans say Trump should drop out of his presidential bid by 2024, most Republicans and nearly half of independents want Trump to continue,” according to the Marist Poll.
The election poll also indicates that “Nearly two in three Republicans and Republican-leaning independents (65 percent) say they plan to support Trump in 2024, up from 58 percent three weeks ago.”
On Thursday, August 24, Trump turned himself in at the Fulton County jail, in the state of Georgia, located in the southeastern United States. He turned himself in, charged with 13 criminal counts for his actions in attempting and conspiring to reverse the results of the 2020 Georgia state election. It is the fourth time Trump – in 2023 alone – has faced criminal charges. He has been charged along with 18 co-defendants. He denies any wrongdoing.
Seven of the co-defendants had still not turned themselves in as of the end of the day on Thursday. They were given a deadline to turn in no later than Friday at 12 noon US Eastern Standard Time (EST). If they don’t, they will face forcible arrest: they will be taken to a Georgia jail against their will.

Prior to his surrender, his lawyers had managed to get him a $200,000 bail deal. Trump paid 10 percent to a local company that oversees the bail bonds. From his arrival at the jail to his departure, the process took no more than 20 minutes, after which Trump returned to the Atlanta airport, boarded his plane, and flew back to his home in New Sweater.

The day before Trump turned himself in, the Republican Party primary candidates participated in their first political debate. Trump did not attend. In the debate, his former vice president Mike Pence made a public acknowledgment. He said: “The American people deserve to know that the president asked me, at his request, to unilaterally reject or return the votes. A power that no vice president in the history of the United States had ever exercised or assumed. He asked me to put it on the Constitution. And I chose the Constitution, and I always will.”
In response, Trump posted on the Truth Social social media platform: “I never asked Mike Pence to put me above the Constitution. Who would say such a thing? A FALSE STORY!”
Trump remains the leading candidate in his party’s primary election race. He hopes to secure the nomination to become the Republican Party’s presidential candidate in the 2024 election race against the Democratic Party.
