Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has responded to criticisms that followed his meeting with Michael Freeman, the Israeli ambassador to Nigeria. The meeting generated mixed reactions, especially from the Muslim community, given the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine. Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a controversial Muslim cleric based in Kaduna, even called for Wike’s dismissal after reports of the meeting surfaced.
However, Wike has clarified that he has no constitutional powers to determine Nigeria’s diplomatic relations with other countries. He explained that such powers are solely vested in the President and Commander-in-Chief of the country. Speaking to reporters, Wike stated that he was acting on a delegation of powers on behalf of the President.
The Minister emphasized that he cannot determine the relationship between Nigeria and other countries. He added that any foreign entity wishing to have any dealings with Nigeria must go through the Minister of Foreign Affairs, who must communicate such interests to him. The Minister further explained that his meeting with the Israeli Ambassador was for agricultural partnership purposes in the interest of farmers in the FCT.
Wike clarified that the partnership had nothing to do with another country, as it was purely for the benefit of farmers in the FCT. He urged Nigerians to live harmoniously and work towards promoting development in the country.
