There was a crisis at the Rivers State House of Assembly this morning as lawmakers had to flee from security forces who fired tear gas. The crisis started last night when unidentified persons set a section of the assembly on fire to disrupt the lawmakers’ plan to impeach the governor. The state Governor, Fubara, and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, are allegedly at odds over the governance of the state.
This morning, the lawmakers gathered to vote for the removal of the House leader, Edison Ehie, who is a close ally of Governor Fubara. The governor and some of his aides also arrived at the Assembly Complex. A protest is currently ongoing outside the complex.
