During the plenary session on Tuesday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio presided over the swearing-in of three new senators to fill previously vacant seats in the upper legislative chamber. The three newly sworn-in senators are Prince Pam Mwadkon from the Action Democratic Party representing Plateau North, Professor Anthony Ani from the All Progressives Congress representing Ebonyi South, and Mustapha Musa from the All Progressives Congress representing Yobe East.
The Clerk of the Senate, Mr. Chinedu Akubueze, administered the oath of office to the new senators at approximately 11:41 am. After the ceremony, the senators were escorted to their designated seats within the chamber.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted bye-elections on February 3rd, 2024, to fill vacancies created by the resignation or death of previously elected lawmakers. These appointments were made following this bye-election.
It should be noted that two senators were appointed to key positions by President Bola Tinubu, while another was removed from office by the Appeal Court.
