Asue Ighodalo, a well-known boardroom expert and lawyer based in Lagos, has officially entered the gubernatorial race in Edo State under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party. The 64-year-old Ighodalo is a former chairman of Sterling Bank Plc and Nigeria Breweries Plc.
He declared his candidacy on Wednesday in Benin City, the capital of Edo State. He hails from Ewohimi in the Esan South-East Local Government Area of Edo Central District and is believed to be supported by the outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki, who has served his constitutional two-term limit. Ighodalo is married to Ifeyinwa, who founded the multimillion-dollar furniture firm Design Options and serves as the board chairman of the popular non-profit organization WIMBIZ.
He is also the brother of the Senior Pastor of Trinity House and a well-known accountant, Ituah Ighodalo. The foremost leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state have already adopted him as their preferred candidate for the governorship ahead of the party’s primary election. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the governorship election for September 21.
