Earlier today, a fire broke out in the Sokoto Central market, causing significant damage to the area where motorcycle and bicycle dealers were located. HB Mayana, a member of the All Progressives Congress, shared pictures of the tragic incident on X this morning. In his post, Mayana expressed his sympathy for the victims and estimated that the losses from the fire could amount to billions of Naira. He also prayed that Allah would reward those who were affected by the fire.
An eyewitness who spoke with Punch claimed that the fire originated from a dump site that was located near the motorcycle section of the market. Meanwhile, Shehu Muhammad, the chairman of the Motorcycles Marketers Association, lamented that they couldn’t determine the exact number of motorcycles that were destroyed by the fire because the fire was still ongoing. He also stated that many people lost their shops along with their motorcycles because they couldn’t arrive in time to save their properties, as the fire broke out around 6 am.
Currently, the federal and state fire services are on the scene, working tirelessly to contain the fire. However, Shehu Muhammad believes that it may take some time before the fire can be fully extinguished.
