A soldier died in a robbery in Benin CityEdo state on Wednesday, police confirmed.
Edo police spokesman Chidi Nwabuzor told reporters that the robbery took place at the intersection of First Eastern Circular and Akpakpaba roads in Benin.
He said the soldier was shot dead by suspected armed robbers who attacked the patrol car carrying the soldier and two of his colleagues.
The patrol van itself was escorting another van loaded with bags that appeared to be loaded with cash.
Nwabuzor said an investigation was underway to unravel the circumstances surrounding the attack.
“A good Nigerian reported the incident to the police station in that neighborhood. The thugs made off with bags saying “Ghana-Must-Go” are believed to have been loaded with cash from the van.

“Since they were on their patrol, they should have been armed. The attackers acted based on information,” added Nwabuzor.
A witness told the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) that the assailants, four of them, drove against the flow of traffic in an unmarked Toyota Camry as they headed towards the military vehicle.
He said that two of the assailants got out of the vehicle and opened fire on the soldiers.
“The soldiers jumped out of the vehicle but one of them was hit by bullets and was unable to escape from the scene.
“Many people would have died if the soldiers had responded to the hail of bullets fired at them, as the area is a very busy place for commercial activities,” the witness said.
