Inmate Receives Life Sentence for Rape at Correctional Facility, as he raped another inmate

A 42-year-old inmate, Jeffrey Bona, who was already serving time for a previous offense at the Mangaung Correctional Facility, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of another inmate. The incident occurred in 2021 at the Bloemfontein Correctional Facility.
According to the National Prosecution Authority (NPA) spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane, Bona repeatedly raped the victim before being reported to the prison authorities. Bona was then arrested and charged with multiple counts of rape.
During the sentencing proceedings, the prosecution argued that Bona showed no remorse for his actions and therefore should be given a life sentence. The court agreed, stating that there were no substantial and compelling reasons to deviate from the prescribed life sentence.
The conviction and sentence of Bona reinforce the commitment of the National Prosecuting Authority to combat crime. According to the NPA, they will continue to prosecute all forms of crime, whether committed by the public or individuals already in prison.
The issue of sexual assault in South African prisons has been highlighted in a study conducted by the University of Pretoria. The study revealed that consensual sex between inmates is prohibited by law, leading to underreporting of such activities. Additionally, correctional authorities sometimes fail to report sexual violations, and relationships between inmates can result in consensual sex.
Despite the code of silence that exists within prisons, sexual offences cannot be ignored. It is important for South Africans to be well-informed about these crimes and for law-abiding citizens to take an interest in what transpires within correctional facilities.
