George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), announced that the 2023 Independence Anniversary celebration will be low-key. In an interview with journalists after a private visit to Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Akume stated that they are fully prepared for the celebration but due to certain circumstances, it will be toned down. However, he wished Nigerians the best of luck and assured them that better days were on the horizon.
“There won’t be a fantastic meeting at Eagles Square and all those places. It is a moment of reflection. It is a time for all of us to think deeply about the path forward.
“Independence Day is a very historic event in the history of any country and we in Nigeria are no exception,” he said.
According to him, President Bola Tinubu’s administration is committed to enhancing the quality of life for Nigerian workers and promoting prosperity for everyone. He acknowledged that achieving these goals would take time and that the government had a four-year mandate since it came into power on May 29.
Therefore, it would be unfair to evaluate their performance based on the few months they have been in office. It is worth noting that Nigeria gained independence from Great Britain on October 1, 1960.
