House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas has appointed Dennis Idahosa (APC, Edo) as Chairman of the Health Services Committee to replace Tanko Sununu, who has been appointed as Minister of State for Education.
The speaker announced Sununu’s replacement in a statement Sunday just as he carried out a minor shakeup of the standing committees reconstituted in July.
Mr. Sununu and Tunji Olubunmi-Ojo are the two members of the Tenth House appointed by President Bola Tinubu as cabinet ministers, hence their resignation from the House.
They were examined and confirmed by the Senate last week.
Mr. Bunmi-Ojo, who is facing questions about his NYSC certificate, has been appointed minister for marine and blue economy, while Mr. Sununu will serve as minister of state for education.
Abbas had set up all 134 standing committees, except for the committee on the military, in July before the House embarked on its annual recess.
With the resignation of the House, Mr. Sununu, who represented the Yauri/Ngaski/Shanga federal constituency of Kebbi State, has been replaced by Mr. Idahosa as Chairman of the Army Committee.
Until this reset, Mr. Idahosa chaired the Electronic and Digital Banking Committee.
The speaker also announced Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo (YPP, Akwa Ibom) as Mr. Idahosa’s replacement as chairman of the electronic and digital banking committee.
The appointment of Mr. Ukpong-Udo also created a vacuum in the institutional reform committee, and that position has been filled by Bukar Talba (APCBorno) as president.

The speaker also announced Mamudu Abdullahi (APC, Niger) as Chairman of the House Committee on the Army. Until this reorganization, Mr. Abdullahi served as Chairman of the Hydrological Services Committee.
The Hydrological Services Committee will now be chaired by Pascal Agbodike (APGA, Anambra).
Abbas said that “the appointments will take immediate effect, while the legislative record will be updated when the House resumes recess.”
