The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FCT FEMA) confirmed the collapse of a two-story building on Wednesday night on Lagos Street, Garki Village, Abuja.
The agency’s head of Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa, said in a statement in Abuja on Thursday that 37 people were rescued alive, while two others were fatally injured.
Mrs. Isa said that a rescue operation was underway to search for more victims.
He added that a combined team from FCT FEMA, the Federal Highway Safety Corps and the Nigeria Police FCT Command were on the ground to rescue and evacuate the victims.
“The two-story building, which serves both residential and commercial use, collapsed on Wednesday night.

“The FCT FEMA search and rescue team is waiting for the excavators to intensify the search to ensure that no victims remain in the rubble of the collapsed building,” he said.
The agency’s CEO, Dr. Abbass Iddriss, praised the efforts of all stakeholders, including community members who were hard at work manually rescuing the trapped people.
