Two robbers who were said to have offered a police officer a bribe of N78,000 after they were found with nine stolen phones from people have been arrested by men of the state police command, the command announced on its Facebook wall on Sunday.
The two men, whose names were given as Suleiman Habibu, aged 25 years and Atiku Mohammed, aged 30 years, were said to have been arrested by men of the Operations Department of the state police command.
It was gathered that the robbers were arrested during a routine patrol by the team behind Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium and handed over to detectives attached to ‘C’ Divisional Police Headquarters for questioning.
They were said to have been found with nine mobile phones in their possession reported to have been stolen from residents in nearby Gombe State.
They were said to have offered the Investigating Officer the sum of N78,000 offered as a bribe to compromise investigation which was said to have been rejected by the policeman.
The command wrote: “Preliminary Investigation revealed that the suspects had stolen nine mobile phones found in their possession from different locations in Gombe State.
“The detectives further recovered dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp as well as the sum of N78,000 offered as a bribe to compromise the investigation but was vehemently declined by the Investigating Officer.”
The statement added that the men are expected to be charged to court at the conclusion of the investigation.
