On Tuesday, January 16th, the Supreme Court is set to hear an appeal that challenges the election of Governor Abdullahi Sule in Nasarawa state. The case is one of the matters on the court’s schedule for that day and it aims to resolve the controversy surrounding the March 2023 governorship poll.
Previously, the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal had declared the rival of Governor Sule, David Ombugadu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the rightful winner of the election. The tribunal ruled that Ombugadu had successfully demonstrated, through witness testimonies, that the election results were tampered with to favor Sule. However, the Court of Appeal in Abuja overturned this decision. The appellate court judges held that the tribunal had made a critical error in accepting the evidence of eight PDP witnesses, whose statements were not submitted along with the initial petition. This prompted Ombugadu to file an appeal to the Supreme Court.
