A Nigerian Army private, Utim Terwase, has been rewarded with ₦500,000 for refusing a bribe of the same amount from a suspected kidnapper in Plateau State.

According to the Army, Terwase arrested the suspect after he tried to run away during an operation.

The suspect then offered Terwase ₦500,000 to let him go.

Terwase turned the money down and handed the man over to the authorities.

The reward was presented on Wednesday by Colonel Philimon Malgwi, Commander of Sector 6, on behalf of Major General Maxwell Dangana, General Officer Commanding 3 Division and Commander of Operation Enduring Peace.

Dangana praised Terwase for his professionalism, loyalty and commitment.

He said the soldier’s refusal to be compromised showed honesty and selfless service, and that his conduct deserves praise and should be copied by other personnel.

He urged officers and soldiers in Operation Enduring Peace to follow Terwase’s example.

He said rewarding such conduct is part of the wider effort to encourage discipline and good behaviour in the operation.
