A year after President Trump put Nigeria back on the U.S. religious freedom watchlist, Congressman Riley Moore says Christians there are still facing terrible violence.

He says more needs to be done.

Moore made the point in a post online, on the anniversary of the decision.

He said the U.S. government, lawmakers and churches must keep working to protect Christians.

He also thanked Trump, Republicans in the House and faith groups for the progress so far.

He said pressure from House Republicans, who want to attach conditions to U.S. aid to Nigeria, is helping.

The idea is to push the Nigerian government to take real action against attacks on Christians.

Moore pointed to one sign of progress: this past Christmas was the first in a long time without a massacre of Christians.

He said there is still a lot of work ahead, but Nigeria’s government has shown some willingness to tackle the violence.

Nigeria was first put on the list in 2020 under Trump’s first term.

Some Republicans and Christian groups felt the security situation had not improved enough.

The Nigerian government rejects the idea that it is running a campaign against Christians.

It says insecurity affects both Christians and Muslims, and blames terrorism, banditry, clashes between communities, and fights between farmers and herders.

It also says it is working with American officials on these concerns.
