Renowned football coach, Godwin Izilein, known for his achievements with Nigeria’s national teams, including leading the Super Falcons to victory in the 2004 WAFCON, has died at the age of 81 in Benin City, Edo State.
Izilein, a former international player and coach, passed away after battling abdominal issues at a hospital in Benin, according to a member of the Izilein family who preferred anonymity.
Kehinde Osagiede, the Media Officer of Edo State-owned Bendel Insurance, confirmed Izilein’s demise, expressing sadness over the loss and acknowledging his significant contributions to football talent development in Nigeria.
Regarded as one of Nigeria’s top indigenous coaches, Izilein’s tenure with the Super Falcons during the 2004 WAFCON was marked by controversy when players protested for unpaid allowances. Despite his efforts, Izilein was not compensated for his coaching services, a situation he lamented in interviews with the media, pleading for the Nigeria Football Federation to settle his owed allowances.
In addition to his national team roles, Izilein also managed local clubs like NNB FC and Bendel Insurance, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to Nigerian football.
