On Friday, Dr. Olayemi Cardoso officially began his role as the acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, after being nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
This was announced by Dr. Isa AbdulMumin, the Director of Corporate Communications at the CBN. The Senate, who are currently on recess, will confirm his appointment. The statement also mentioned that the deputy governor-designates have taken up their positions following the resignation of the previous deputies. It was noted that Dr. Cardoso replaced Mr. Godwin Emefiele who had resigned from his position as Governor of the CBN.
Four former Deputy Governors of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) have resigned, leading to the assumption of their duties by the newly appointed Deputy-Governors-Designate. Emem Usoro, Muhammad Abdullahi-Dattijo, Philip Ikeazor, and Bala Bello have taken up their roles in acting capacities.
The oath of office was administered to them and their colleague, Dr. Cardoso, at a brief ceremony held at the Bank’s Head Office in Abuja on Friday, September 2023. They have already begun their work to administer monetary and financial sector policies for the Federal Government.
The Senate will screen the apex bank governor and other CBN executives as soon as it receives an executive communication upon resumption from its annual recess, according to Yemi Adaramodu, the Senate spokesperson and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity. The Central Bank of Nigeria has postponed its Monetary Policy Committee’s 293rd meeting, which was scheduled for September 25 and 26, 2023.
