President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to speak at the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday at 11 pm Nigerian time. The focus of his speech will be on addressing climate change, tackling illicit financial flows, and advocating for the return of assets to Nigeria to encourage stronger international cooperation.
Additionally, Tinubu will highlight Nigeria’s efforts towards achieving the Strategic Development Goals (SDGs) and promoting international peace and security.
The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Francisca Omayuli, confirmed this in a statement released on Monday. The 78th UNGA General Debate, which begins today, will be presided over by Mr. Dennis Francis of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
The theme of this year’s General Debate is “Rebuilding Trust and Reigniting Global Solidarity: Accelerating Action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) towards Peace, Prosperity, Progress, and Solidarity for all.”
“As the practice is, member states will have the opportunity to share their perspectives on the theme and present their national positions on each of the thematic items, which make up the overriding theme.”
Omayuli said in addition to the General Debate, Nigeria is expected to demonstrate leadership while participating in the various meetings scheduled for the High-Level week.
The meetings include: “Preparatory Ministerial Meeting for the Summit of the Future, convened by the secretary-general of the United Nations today, Monday, 18th September, 2023. It will be attended by the minister of foreign affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar.
“High-Level Political Forum on SDGs convened by the General Assembly (GA) and scheduled to hold on Monday, 18th September 2023; General Debate to hold from Tuesday, 19th – Tuesday, 26th September 2023.
There are several important meetings and events scheduled for the week of September 20-26, 2023. The Climate Ambition Summit, convened by the United Nations secretary-general, is set to take place on September 20th. Also on that day, there will be a High-Level Meeting on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response. The following day, September 21st, there will be a High-Level Dialogue on Financing for Development and a High-Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage.
On September 22nd, there will be a High-Level Meeting focused on the Fight against Tuberculosis. Finally, on September 26th, there will be a High-Level Meeting to commemorate the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
It has been noted that Nigerian leader Tinubu’s participation in the 78th UNGA will enhance Nigeria’s visibility and foster closer partnerships with other world leaders and development partners. This will be Tinubu’s first time participating in the UNGA.
