In an interview with newsmen on Saturday, the Commissioner for Justice in Jigawa State, Barrister Musa Aliyu, revealed that out of the total number of 1718 inmates serving different jail terms in the state, 1576 of them are youths. The high number of young people serving jail terms has raised concerns for the government.

During a recent press conference, Mr. Adam expressed concern about the high number of young inmates in Jigawa State, revealing that out of 1,718 inmates, 1,576 were between the ages of 18 and 45. The commissioner emphasized the State government’s commitment to repositioning and reforming the judiciary to improve service delivery.

He outlined a four-point agenda for the Judiciary Reforms, which includes the review of correctional centers’ setup. Additionally, the State’s laws will be reviewed to align with modern times, and a law for the Administration of Criminal Justice will be implemented in collaboration with all security agencies and other critical stakeholders.

The government is planning to establish a committee to monitor and implement criminal justice matters, as well as create an Anti-Corruption Commission. The emphasis will be on public enlightenment and engagement. To achieve these goals, the government is seeking the support of legal professionals, retired judges, academicians, international partners, civil societies, religious and traditional leaders, and the general public.
