Nigerien protesters tried to attack the Nigerian embassy in Niamey but were repelled by the Nigerien army, an official said.
The attempted attack occurred on Sunday, July 30, four days after the presidential guard overthrew the democratically elected government of President Mohamed Bazoum, who has since been detained with his family.
The Nigerian ambassador to Niger, Mohamed Usman, claimed this in a Friday statement signed by embassy staffer Liti Auwalu, following a video shared on social media of a burning building that many claimed to be the embassy. from Nigeria.
“At the moment, the Embassy is well protected by the Niger army and other security authorities,” the statement said, reiterating that the videos are false and should be ignored.
Nigeria has continued to operate its embassy in Niger despite the coup there and the strong response from ECOWAS.

Presidential guards led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani on Wednesday July 26 arrested Mr. Bazoum, dissolved the government and assumed leadership of the country.
In response, ECOWAS imposed sanctions on Niger in an attempt to get Mr. Bazoum reinstated. He also gave a seven-day ultimatum to the coup plotters who ignored it.
The bloc held another meeting last Thursday in which it ordered the activation and deployment of its reserve force to restore constitutional order in Niger.
