The National and State Assembly Electoral Petitions Tribunal in Kano has sacked Dankawu Idris of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) for falsifying his secondary school certificate.
Idris represents Kumbotso Federal Constituency in Kano State in the House of Representatives.
Subsequently, the Chief Justice, I. Chima, declared Mannir Danagundi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the legitimate winner of the elections held on February 25.
Delivering judgment on Monday, the judge ruled that the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) certificate submitted by the respondent, Mr Idris, was false.
The court then ordered Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue APC candidate, Mr. Dan-agundi, a certificate of return.
Danagundi challenged Idris’ election in court.
Idris is the second NNPP legislator to be sacked by the election petition tribunal for forging certificates.
In August, the court annulled the election of the member representing the Tarauni federal constituency, Mukhtar Yarima.
The election of Mr. Yerima, a member of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), was annulled for falsification of certificates.
The All Progressives Congress (APC)c candidate challenged Mr Yerima’s election in court over alleged falsification of his primary school certificate.
According to Monday’s ruling, the NNPP has lost three seats in the House of Representatives to the opposition APC in Kano.
Two of the seats were due to alleged forgery, while the other was due to the candidate’s failure to resign from his or her initial place of employment 30 days before the election, as provided for in the 2022 Electoral Law.
Although none of the fired lawmakers have indicated that they would challenge the court’s ruling in the next court of higher jurisdiction as stipulated by the electoral law, they are expected to do so.
