The Nigerian military has described as “very unpatriotic, perverse” the call by some Nigerians for a coup in the country.
In a statement by its spokesman, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the military also reaffirmed its commitment to democracy.

Defense Heaquartes frown on a report circulating online about welfare issues in the Nigerian Armed Forces. The report’s call for the military to interfere in our democracy is highly unpatriotic, perverse and an attempt to distract the Nigerian Armed Forces from fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities.
While the AFN leadership places the welfare of its personnel first, we detest any attempt by any individual or group to incite the law-abiding Nigerian Armed Forces to embark on any unconstitutional change of government in our country. We wish to state unequivocally that the military is happy and better off under democracy and will not engage in any act to sabotage our country’s hard-won democracy.

The AFN under the leadership of the Chief of the Defense Staff, General CG Musa is determined to ensure the complete subordination of the Armed Forces to the constitutional authority under His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and they will not be distracted from their roles which are well defined in the 1999 (amended) constitution.
