Gauteng’s Operation Shanela: Over 940 Suspects Arrested in Weekend Crackdown
The relentless efforts of law enforcement in Gauteng, under the leadership of Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, bore fruit once again with the execution of Operation Shanela over the past weekend. This targeted operation resulted in a significant dent in criminal activities across the province, with a staggering total of more than 940 suspects apprehended for a wide range of offenses, including murder, attempted murder, rape, business robbery, drug dealing, possession of suspected stolen vehicles, assault, and illegal immigration.
Initiated on the evening of Saturday, May 4, 2024, Operation Shanela focused on tracking down wanted suspects, particularly those involved in heinous crimes against women and children. Despite the perpetrators’ attempts to evade justice, the swift and coordinated actions of law enforcement agencies led to the successful arrest of the majority of suspects in various locations throughout Gauteng.
Lieutenant General Mthombeni personally spearheaded the operation in Ivory Park, situated within the Ekurhuleni District, an area notorious for its high incidence of contact crimes such as murder, assault, and robbery. At strategically placed roadblocks, law enforcement officers apprehended over 35 suspects caught driving under the influence of alcohol, highlighting the concerted efforts to curb drunk driving and promote road safety. Furthermore, a vehicle was impounded after evidence of tampering was discovered, underscoring the commitment to combating vehicle-related crimes.
In a proactive measure to tackle the root causes of crime, Operation Shanela targeted illegal liquor outlets suspected of fueling criminal activities. As a result, 19 such establishments were promptly shut down, and their stocks of illicit liquor were confiscated during the operation.

The arrested suspects will face the full force of the law as they undergo legal proceedings at various magistrate’s courts across the province.
