A new phenomenon called “influencers” or “creators” has arisen in the last several years due to the explosion of social media. These guys create videos for their followers to watch on social networking sites like TikTok.
However, this can occasionally be deceptive or harmful, leading to unsavoury outcomes for both the individuals involved and the communities they are a part of. The South African village of Seshego recently saw a similar incident.
A TikToker from Seshego shared a video mentioning the Seshego Community Action Group (SCACAG) after receiving false information. When the locals saw this film, which they took to be an attack on their way of life, they were understandably terrified.
Thankfully, the TikToker has since taken responsibility for his actions and apologised. He said he was mistaken about what was going on and expressed regret for the hurt he caused. On top of that, he has repeatedly stated his intention to avoid any kind of confrontation with the locals. The fact that the TikToker has apologised and accepted responsibility for his actions is good.
