The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has lambasted the governorship election conducted by the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday, labeling it as a “huge charade” and “a mockery of democracy in every sense of the word.” The criticism comes in the wake of the declaration by Governor of Kogi State, Usman Ododo, and chairman of the seven-member committee tasked with supervising the exercise, that the governorship primary was inconclusive.In a statement released through its Publicity Secretary in Ondo, Kennedy Peretei, the PDP denounced the APC’s handling of the primary, stating, “If the APC cannot conduct a free, fair, transparent, and credible primary election for 171,922 of their members, they should abandon any notion of governing Ondo State beyond the eight years in which they have practically stagnated the State.”The statement, titled “APC Governorship Primary: An Anticlimax and Mockery of Democracy,” further criticized the APC’s conduct, alleging financial exploitation of aspirants and irregularities in the electoral process. The PDP highlighted signs of trouble emerging 48 hours before the primary, when five aspirants petitioned the APC National Headquarters regarding irregularities in the accreditation of members for the primary.The PDP also referenced past incidents, including the 2020 primary, presided over by former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, which was marred by similar controversies. This time, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo was accused of exacerbating the situation. Journalists attempting to monitor the primary reported a lack of election materials and officials at many centers. Additionally, instances of violence were reported in Akure South and Okitipupa Local Government Areas, where political thugs allegedly disrupted the process.The PDP called for the cancellation of the exercise, asserting that the APC’s inability to present a single candidate from its sixteen aspirants reflects poorly on the party’s credibility.
