Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has publicly endorsed Raila Odinga for the position of chairperson of the African Union Commission. During a media briefing held in Nairobi alongside Raila, Obasanjo expressed his confidence in Raila’s suitability for the position, provided that he is supported by the East African region.
Obasanjo, who is also the AU Special Envoy, stated that he believes it is East Africa’s turn to hold the position, as it has been occupied by Southern, Central, and West African regions in the past. He further added that Raila should not only be a candidate for his country but also one representing the East African region.
Obasanjo encouraged the region to come together and present a candidate that they believe is fit for the position. The current chair, Moussa Faki Mahamat, is set to leave office in March next year.
