Akwa Ibom state police said they have arrested a man suspected of being responsible for the collapse of a four-story building in Uyo last September.
The building, on Iman Street off Aka Road, Uyo, was supposed to be a six-story building. Contractors were on the fourth floor when it collapsed, Newslodge reported.
The South-South Zonal Coordinator of the National Emergency Management AgencyGodwin Tepikor told reporters that two people died in the incident.
“We have recovered a corpse here and the other died in the hospital due to multiple injuries,” he had said while the rescue operation was taking place.
Akwa Ibom State Police Commissioner Olatoye Durosinmi told reporters on Wednesday that the “construction engineer” for the construction project ran away immediately after the incident and was arrested on August 7, a year later.
He identified the suspect as Felix Udoh of Felixzity High Technology Limited.
Durosinmi, however, said only one person, Favor Okoro, was killed in the incident, while five people were rescued.
“During the interrogation, the suspect confessed not to be an engineer but a builder,” the police chief said.
He said the suspect would be prosecuted in court.
The incident was not the first building collapse in Uyo. Many people died in 2016 when a church building collapsed in the city.
