The Delta state government on Wednesday approved the sum of 167 billion naira as a supplementary budget for the fiscal year 2023.
The government also approved 10 billion naira as a social investment to finance palliative care for women, widows, youth and people with physical disabilities.
The approvals were given at the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Wednesday at Asaba Government House.
Part of the money would be spent on public works to cushion the impacts of the harsh economic situation facing the citizens of the state.
The state commissioner for works (roads and urban roads), Reuben Izeze, and his counterpart in economic planning, Sonny Ekedayen, briefed journalists on the council’s decision, accompanied by Festus Ahon, the governor’s spokesman.
Ekedayen said that the council has approved the sum of 167 billion naira as the supplementary budget for 2023, of which about 65 percent is for capital expenditure, while the rest is for recurrent expenditure.
40 billion naira credit line for local government councils
Ekedayen said the council has also approved a Naira 40 billion credit line offer to the state’s 25 local government councils to cover a substantial part of the outstanding retirement benefits of local government pensioners.
According to Izeze, the approval of the 167 billion naira supplementary budget and the 10 billion naira funds for palliative care would be sent to the House of Assembly for approval.
He noted that the 10 billion naira would increase the amount the federal government provided to the state to cushion the impact of economic hardship.
He said that the government also approved the construction of several highways in compliance with the MORE Agenda of Governor Oborevwori’s administration.
He said all three Senate districts are covered and the highway projects are “critical to improving the economic situation of the town.”
“The council approved the reconstruction of the upper and lower Erejuwa roads in Warri; Rehabilitation of Esisi Road from Warri-Sapele Road to the Estate Roundabout with a spur to Nana College to link to Ajamimogha in Warri.
“Rehabilitation and asphalting of the failed sections of PTI Road in Effurun, Uvwie local government area; rehabilitation and asphalting of the Oviri Court-Adagbrasa road in the Okpe local government area.
“Also rehabilitation and asphalting of the Ohorhe-Adagbrasa-Ugolo-Okuodiete road with a branch from Adagbrasa to the community of Ughwagba to the Okan junction along the Eku-Osubi-Effurun road in Okpe LGA.
“Road construction around the Otovwodo junction at the Ughelli North LGA; Construction of the Nsukwa-Umute-Adonte Highway Phase 1 from Nsukwa to Umute in Aniocha Sur LGA.
“Repair work on the failed access to the Bedesegba bridge along the Ohoror-Bomadi road at Bomadi LGA,” Izeze said.
He added: “The council has also granted approval for the installation of all-in-one solar powered LED street lamps along and around the NPA – DSC Expressway at Uvwie and Warri South LGA.
“Approved the payment of the 2023 counterpart fund for the Universal Basic Education Program and for the organization and venue of the Seventh Edition of the National Youth Games in the state.”
