Expressing deep concern over the ongoing economic challenges and worsening security issues in Nigeria, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has called on Nigerians to rally behind Bola Tinubu to overcome what they describe as eight years of “calamitous, retrogressive administration” under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to Sahara Reporters, the statement, signed by CAN’s Secretary-General, Elder Sunday Oibe, highlights the unbearable suffering faced by ordinary Nigerians, citing the escalating cost of living, high prices of foodstuffs, goods, and services, coupled with a decline in the value of the Naira.
“The epileptic power supply has led to the collapse of many small businesses. The seeming inability of the government to address the situation has completely weakened the purchasing power of ordinary Nigerians,” the statement emphasized.
The Northern CAN also expressed concern over the escalating insecurity marked by rampant killings and kidnappings for ransom. It called on the government to take urgent steps to address the depressing economic and security situation in the country.
The association specifically pointed out the recent attacks by bandits in Plateau State, condemning the lack of justice for victims and calling for immediate action to stop killings not only in Plateau but across the country.
Despite acknowledging the sacrifices of security agencies, the Northern CAN urged a review of the security architecture for more effective and decisive action against criminal elements. It also called on governments at all levels to provide the necessary support to security agencies.
In addition, the statement expressed concern about the establishment of a security outfit by the herders’ union, Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, in Nasarawa State. The Northern CAN strongly opposed the idea, considering it an invitation to anarchy and insisted that no ethnic group should be allowed to form an exclusive security outfit.
Addressing the relocation of the headquarters of the Federal Airport Authority (FAAN) and some departments of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) from Abuja to Lagos, the Northern CAN criticized the introduction of ethnic and regional sentiments into what they consider a harmless policy. The association called on Nigerians to view government policies objectively and support the administration in overcoming the challenges faced during the previous eight years.
