The man who designed the Nigerian flag, Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, has died.
Akinkunmi died at the age of 86 in the early hours of Tuesday after a brief illness.
His death was announced through the Facebook account of one of his sons, Samuel Akinkunmi.
He wrote: “Life is indeed transitory; I can boldly say that you live a life with a milestone. Keep resting, my father! Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi (OFR): The great man is gone.”
Although he was born in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Mr. Akinkumi lived in Ibadan until his death.
He was born on May 10, 1936.

He lived with his father until he was 8 years old before moving to the northern part of Nigeria. She began her early education in the North. After her father’s retirement, she came to the West and re-enrolled at Baptist Day Secondary School, Ibadan, for her primary education and Ibadan Secondary School(IGS) Ibadan, for his secondary education.
Mr. Akinkunmi left IGS in 1955 and accepted a post as a farmer at the Western Region Secretariat in Ibadan as a civil servant. He would then work for a few years before being admitted to Norwood Technical College in London, where he studied electrical engineering. While studying there, he designed the Nigerian flag.

His project was considered the best among the approximately 2,000 designs submitted.
The flag was officially raised on Independence Day, October 1, 1960, meaning the British flag was lowered in Nigeria.
The government rewarded Akinkunmi £100 when his design was selected. He was honored as a Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) by former President Goodluck Jonathan.
