Shock engulfed Meru University on Friday after a fourth-year female student committed suicide by hanging herself after an alleged sour relationship with her lover.
The body of the student, only identified as Stella, was found inside her rented house after she allegedly separated from her lover.
Her colleagues said the deceased used a sisal rope to strangle herself shortly after she learnt her lover had eloped with another woman.
The action by the student shocked fellow students who described her as focused and wondered why she committed suicide over a love affair.
Concerns have risen over the increasing cases of university students committing suicide over relationships. Many students, who struggle with depression and other mental illnesses, are being left to flounder with tragic results, causing family untold pain.
Stung by the rising cases of campus suicides, most universities have come up with programs to curb the rising incidences. Additionally, students are urged to seek better ways of resolving their disputes rather than committing suicide.
