Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja Minister Nyesom Wike says the FCT Administration has finalized plans to reintroduce monthly sanitation as part of strategies to keep the city clean.
Wike made this claim in Abuja on Monday after a closed-door meeting with contractors running different projects at the FCT.
He said that he had already informed President Bola Tinubu about the idea that at least two Saturdays a month would be declared sanitary from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.
He explained that the measure would allow companies that support the FCT with logistics to go to the market and other public places to evacuate waste.
According to him, for Abuja to be clean, everyone needs to cooperate.
“We must all make sacrifices. There is nothing like we are going to suffer. You also contribute to reject.
“So if you spend three hours on a Saturday at home picking up the trash and taking it out for us to evacuate and dispose of, then that’s one small way you can help.
“We call on you (residents) to cooperate with us so that we can achieve our goals.”
Regarding public lighting, the minister said that there were some improvements.
“We have not reached that point yet, but I can assure you that everywhere in Abuja will be illuminated,” he said.
For those who have distorted the Abuja Master Plan, Mr. Wike said that the issue would be addressed soon.
He added that the Federal Capital Territory Administration is determining which will be the areas where the parks and green areas will be located and in which areas they will be built.
He also said that the government would investigate those who refused to develop their plots for many years.
Wike said the administration led by President Tinubu would not continue to allow undeveloped land throughout the city where criminals were sheltering.
“How can you have vacant land in the city and allow people to build shanty towns on it because you didn’t develop it?
“Some properties were built for 20 years but not completed. Go and see what is happening there. Criminals have taken over the place and as a serious government we will not allow it.
“We want to make Abuja a safe environment, but we cannot do it alone; We require the support of all stakeholders,” the minister said.
He also said attention will be given to the satellite towns beginning with a visit to the areas to determine the needs and decide what can be done to improve their facilities and infrastructure.
He pointed out that there is no funding to intervene in all the satellite cities at the same time, but one at a time, subject to the availability of funds.

“It is unfortunate that contracts have been awarded in virtually all satellite cities, but where is the funding? The finding is not there,” Wike said.
He said that what was approved for FCT in the 2022 national budget was 15 billion naira for “contracts worth not less than one trillion naira”, stressing the need for the ministry to prioritize its spending.
