The Bayelsa State Caucus in the House of Representatives has urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the crisis in the Nembe local government area of the state.
The group, during a press conference at the National Assembly on Monday, said the latest killings and maimings of innocent citizens in Opu-Nembe in the Nembe local government are politically motivated.
Some people were reportedly killed in Nembe following attacks on the community on 15 August.
Marie Ebikake (PDP, Bayelsa), speaking on behalf of the group, said the president should commission a panel of inquiry to investigate the alleged involvement of the Nigerian Police.
He said: “We want to condemn in the strongest terms the killing and maiming of innocent citizens in Opu-Nembe, Nembe Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, acting at the behest of people bent on destroying the existing peace. .
“We want to take this opportunity to ask the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to urgently create a high-powered commission of inquiry into the immediate and remote causes, including the role of the police. of Nigeria, in particular the SWAT department, its funding source and others who played a role in the armed invasion to ensure that the perpetrators were caught and forced to face the wrath of the law.”
He said some Nembe youths are currently detained in Abuja after they were arrested by police after a raid on the community.
The legislator said that the police officers who carried out the raid ignored the state governor, who is the head of security.
He also urged the families of the victims to remain calm while the relevant authorities are allowed to investigate the incident.
“We also want to use this medium to appeal to the families of those who died in the unfortunate incident to remain calm and allow peace to reign in the kingdom. We offer our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and call on all the sons and daughters of Nembe to remain calm,” he stated.
Other legislators who attended the briefing included: Agbedi Frederick, Rodney Ambaiowei and Obuku Oforji.
