The Chairman of the Independent Commission on Corrupt Practices and Other Related Crimes (ICPC), Bolaji Owasanoye, has urged workers at the Sokoto Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Sokoto state to prevent and expose any acts of corruption at the hospital.
Mr Owasanoye, Professor of Law and Chief Advocate for Nigeria (SAN), delivered the charge at the inauguration of the hospital’s Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) on Monday in the Kware local government area.
The president, represented by the ICPC resident commissioner in charge of Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara, Garba Tukur-Idris, stressed the need for workers to continue to ensure that the hospital remains free of corruption.
He attributed the increasing level of corruption in public offices to community pressure and people’s expectations of public service workers in the country.
Owasanoye praised the hospital’s medical director, Shehu Sale, a professor, for supporting ACTU and ensuring its effective operation.
The president explained that the federal government commissioned CIPC to establish anti-corruption units in all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), as an internal mechanism for monitoring and reporting corruption issues.
He urged the inaugurated members of the ACTU to live honestly and serve as ICPC’s representatives in the fight against corruption in the institution.
“Without question, for the war against corruption to be fought and won in all MDAs in a sustainable manner, all hands must be open, as allies in the war against corruption, we believe that ACTU members must be in tune with ICPC,” Mr. Owasanoye added.
In his comment, the Medical Director praised ICPC for its support and encouragement that ensured sanity and prudence in hospital affairs.
Mr Sale has pledged to sponsor some of the hospital staff to receive training at the ICPC Academy to strengthen their capacity and effectiveness in fighting corruption in the hospital.
He said the hospital had automated all its services, including financial transactions, as part of efforts to ensure transparency in its activities.
He praised ICPC’s approach to fighting corruption and called on Nigerians to support the anti-corruption agency.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that ACTU members were sworn in before Suleiman Ahmad, a lawyer, while Abdullah Abubakar gave a lecture on ACTU’s responsibilities.
