Amakoromo Waikumo, who contested under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) party, has won the re-run election for Yenagoa Constituency 2 in Bayelsa State House of Assembly. The election was conducted in seven units across Gbarain 1 & 2, and Ekpetiama 1 & 2 wards. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Waikumo the winner on Saturday, February 3rd after the initial results for the areas were cancelled due to electoral malpractices.
Waikumo secured 5,959 votes, defeating Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 5,263 votes. The state returning officer and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Otuoke, Prof. Chris Onyema, announced Waikumo as the winner, affirming that he had satisfied all legal requirements and emerged with the highest number of votes.
It is worth noting that this victory was not without controversy. Waikumo was initially declared as the winner of the election held on November 11th, 2023, but Koku-Obiyai challenged the outcome in court, which subsequently ordered a re-run.
