Niger’s military junta asked the French ambassador to the country on Friday to leave.
In a letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation addressed to the French Foreign Ministry, the junta said the envoy, Sylvain Itte, had 48 hours to leave Niger for refusing to respond to an invitation for an interview from the junta.
He also cited “…other actions by the French government, contrary to the interests of Niger” as one of the reasons for expelling Mr. Itte.
Anti-French sentiments have risen in Niger since the July 26 coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum. Coup apologists attacked the French embassy in Niamey while waving the Russian flag.
The expulsion of the French ambassador is an indication of the deteriorating relationship between Niger and its former colonial lord, France.

In response to the junta’s letter, the French Foreign Ministry told AFP that “France has taken note of the coup plotters’ request,” but “the putschists have no authority to make this request, since the approval of the ambassador comes only from the elected legitimate Nigerian representative”. authorities.”
He added that he is constantly evaluating the security and operating conditions of his embassy in Niamey.
France joined other world leaders in condemning the coup and has consistently called for Bazoum’s reinstatement. He has also made public his support for ECOWAS and its resolutions.
