Police Commissioner in anambra stateAderemi Adeoye, rewarded an officer 250,000 naira for refusing a bribe offered by an alleged armored cable thief in the state.
The officer, Charity Oyor, Inspector, serves with the Onitsha Main Market Police Division in the North Onitsha Local Government Area of the state.
State police spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga revealed this in a statement to Newslodge on Friday.
How the officer refused the bribe
Ikenga, deputy superintendent of police, said Oyor was on duty at the market on Wednesday when he saw a moving bus carrying six heavy bales of armored cables that were suspected of being stolen.
The police spokesman said the officer stopped the vehicle and questioned the driver about the shipment.
He said the driver, instead of explaining how he got to the wires, immediately offered the officer a bribe, which she refused.
Police did not mention the amount offered to the officer.
“The police inspector called her Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Superintendent Joy Chidinma Ikpeama, who led police personnel to the scene and arrested the suspect,” Ikenga said.
“The cable was seized and taken to the police station for investigation,” he said.
The police spokesman said that, at the police station, the suspect subsequently offered 500,000 naira as a bribe to be allowed to go, but officers at the facility refused the bribe.

He said that the DPO consequently informed the police commissioner about the arrest and recovery of the cables.
“The police commissioner then ordered the Awka State Criminal Investigation Department to take over the case to investigate the origin of the cables used,” he said.

At the cash award presentation on Friday, the commissioner praised the DPO for providing good leadership and also praised the officer for her rectitude, Ikenga said.
Adeoye urged all state police personnel to always uphold the ethics of the profession by refusing to be compromised in the performance of their duties.
In response, Ms. Ikpeama, the DPO, thanked the commissioner for leading by example and said that the officer was inspired by his leadership style.
For her part, Mrs. Oyor, the official, promised to return to work while thanking the commissioner for his generosity.
The deputy police commissioner in charge of administration, Peter Umoru, was also present during the award ceremony.
