The Nigerian women’s volleyball team finished in sixth position in this edition. Senior Women’s Volleyball African Nations Championship 2023 in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
Nigeria lost to Algeria 1-3 (18-25, 13-25, 25-23, 17-25) in the 5-6 qualifying match at Palais Polyvalent des Sports Yaoundé on Thursday.
In the first set, Nigeria posed a bigger threat to Algeria, earning points on every move before the Nigerian girls lost their concentration, derailing their lofty ambitions. Algeria took advantage of their opponents’ mistakes and took the set by 25 to 18 points.
The second set was easy for the Algerian team as they came out very hot to defeat the Nigerian ladies by 25 to 13 points.

Nigeria showed more determination in the third set taking vital points away from the Algerians.
Ijeoma Ukpabi and Kelechi Ndukauba eased their opponents’ fears as they took the set 25-23 points in what looked like a comeback mission.
But it was an impossible mission for the green and white ladies, as the Algerians attacked strongly in the fourth set, wearing the number 11 shirt in top form, racking up a total of 13 points against Nigeria.
The game finally went in favor of the Algerians by 25 to 17 points, against Nigeria.
It was supposed to be a revenge match for the Nigerian team, but rather further humiliation by the Algerians. The team would regret the missed opportunities but, as the saying goes, they live to fight better another day.
