Newly appointed Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike says he sought permission from some leaders of the Democratic Party of the Peoples (PDP) before accepting the ministerial offer of President Bola Tinubu.
Wike, the immediate former governor of Rivers State and a member of the PDP, was sworn in as FCT minister on Monday along with other ministers from the Bola Tinubu administration.
His appointment was met with criticism from the public because he is a member of the PPD and also because he once said that he will not serve as a minister after having been governor.
Responding to criticism at his first press conference as minister, Wike explained that before accepting the ministerial appointment, he wrote letters to PDP acting national chairman Umar Damagun, the incumbent Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara and minority leaders in the Senate. and the House of Representatives, seeking his permission to accept the offer.
He said that all the PDP leaders he asked for their permission responded by granting him permission to accept the ministerial offer.
“Can you even mention who my enemy is? Can you even name one person who is my enemy? Look, people carry propaganda. Let me take this opportunity to tell you that I don’t like people who don’t tell the truth.
“They said that they are going to sanction me because I accepted the appointment. I don’t have any clause.

“The president wrote to the governors of the 36 states to bring the names of the people to be appointed, didn’t the PPD governors send names? Each PDP governor wrote a letter and nominated ten people to be appointed by this government.
“But they are talking about Wike. Before this appointment came, I wrote to the national president. I wrote to the minority leaders of the House of Representatives and the Senate.
“I wrote to the zone president of the party and to the president of my state. I wrote to my governor and they all replied and told me to accept.
“I have my documented evidence. Forget about these reggae dancers. I call them reggae dancers because when you miss your chance, you miss your chance because of arrogance and impunity,” Wike said.
