The meeting was a continuation of the agency’s flood mitigation and adaptation awareness campaign with the theme “A Flood-Free Lagos 2023: Building Resilience to Floods is Our Collective Responsibility.”

on Tuesday at the agency’s Command and Control Center in Ikeja, he met with representatives of local authorities in the East Lakes senatorial district.
In a statement from its spokesperson Nosa Okunbor, LASEMA said it had carried out a flood analysis in all district council areas to sensitize authorities and expose them to ways to control the threat.
“The flooding incidents in the local council development areas in the district have been found to be man-made and are wreaking havoc on the environment,” the statement read.

Mr. Oke-Osanyintolu said that a flood-free Lagos is everyone’s responsibility.
He urged them to establish a chain of command in their respective areas and warned against an indifferent attitude towards waste disposal.
“Eighty percent of the disasters we are experiencing, especially floods, are man-made, so we have decided that we are going to change the attitude and orientation of people towards mitigation, so we are ready to work. with local governments, partners. with them to curb the threat of flooding and ensure that there is no mortality or morbidity regardless of the intensity of the rains predicted by NIMET,” said the agency’s permanent secretary.
LASEMA data indicates that the agency responded to 119 incidents in July alone, while it responded to and managed 795 incidents between January and July, ranging from traffic accidents, building collapses, fires and gas pipeline explosions.
Mr. Oke-Osanyintolu noted that the state government’s “big investment in emergency management” would not produce the desired result without the effective engagement and support of local authorities as well as residents.
Femi Kabir, vice-president of the Ijede local council, identified poor drainage systems as responsible for the flooding and promised that LASEMA’s advice on the necessary intervention would be duly implemented.
“We will return home to strengthen the defense of flood prevention. We will meet with the CDC and CDA to stop the indiscriminate dumping of garbage,” Mr. Kabir said, speaking on behalf of his colleagues.
“So far we have been designing and cleaning the gutters, we will go back to our communities and tell our people what LASEMA has shown us and the role each and every one of us should play in preventing flood disasters. ”.
