The Center for Fiscal Transparency and Integrity Monitoring will host today an international symposium on organized crime in Africa.
The symposium, the first of its kind, aims to discuss and explore effective strategies to confront organized crime on the African continent.
The theme of the event scheduled for October 24 and 25 is “Building resilient institutions to counter emerging threats.”
Speakers at the symposium
Speakers at the event include security personnel, security experts, academics, journalists and civil society actors.
Speakers include Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; and Interpol Vice President Garba Umar, Deputy Inspector General of Police (AIG).
Other speakers are the national director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Oliver Stole; the director for Africa of the MacArthur Foundation, Kole Shettima; the Coordinator of the Security, Violence and Conflict (SVC) Research Group at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Freedom Onuoha, Professor; and Humangle Media Deputy Investigations Editor Ibrahim Adeyemi, among others.
Discussions
The symposium would also include several panel sessions to discuss the nexus between violent conflict and organized crime and the threat to regional stability, the organized crime network in the Gulf of Guinea and maritime security, cybercrime in Africa and the financing of terrorism.
At the event, the Center for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) will present a report on the economics of violence and the livelihood of violent groups in the Lake Chad basin.
