Nigerian Navy Ship Beecroft Patrol Team on Tuesday intercepted and detained 11 stowaways aboard the Guangzhou Highway Panama ship, which was bound for Ghana.
The stowaways were intercepted around 7:00 p.m. in dark spaces in the aft door of the ship.
Consequently, the Western Regional Control Center (WRCC) was immediately informed and the ship was ordered to stop at the Lagos anchorage.
Beecroft is under the command of Kolawole Oguntuga, a commodore.
Initially, four stowaways were detained at the stern of the ship.
However, the information provided by these people revealed the presence of additional stowaways inside the ship.
After an extensive search, seven more stowaways were discovered inside the ship, bringing the total to 11 stowaways who were quickly disembarked from the ship and taken into custody.
The arrested persons were identified as Shedrack David, 19, from Ondo State, Godbless, 30, from Delta State, Ibrahim Hassan, 30, from Adamawa State, Solomon Francis, 21, from the State of Ondo, Bolaji Johnson, 28, from Ondo State and Samsom Aimy, 37, from Bayelsa State.
The other is Ayefuwei Collins, 27 years old. delta stateAyo Gula 28 Delta State, Jolomi Daniel 23 years Ondo State, Abubakar Ibrahim 19 years Zamfara State and Precious Uwalogho 30 years Delta State.
They have been handed over to the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) in accordance with established protocols.
In addition to stowaways exposing themselves to life-threatening situations during the long sea journey, they also present myriad safety challenges.
