The second defendant in the Ogun State Election Petition Court, Governor Dapo Abiodun, closed this Tuesday his defense of the petition presented against his re-election by the candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Ladi Adebutu.
Mr. Abiodun, in his defense, accused Mr. Adebutu of engaging in vote-buying which he claimed led to the “deliberate disruption” of the election by alleged thugs.
The governor, who opened his defense on Friday, called six witnesses, including a West African Examination Council (WAEC) official and a Zenith Bank staffer, voters and party representatives.
Mr. Abiodun also provided documents including his West African Examination Council (WAEC) certificate, the report of the production of 200,000 units of ATM top-up cards by Mr. Adebutu, a letter of authorization from the petitioner to open an account at Zenith Bank from which the top-up cards were pre-loaded with N10,000 each and a piece of paper showing the sample of the pre-loaded cards.

At Tuesday’s hearing, Abiodun’s lawyer, Wole Olanipekun (SAN), called his last witness, Solomon Sanyaolu, director general of Abiodun’s campaign committee.
Mr. Olanipekun also submitted a National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) report and a police investigation report.
The court, led by Hamidu Kunaza, admitted the documents and marked them as evidence.
The APC is expected to open its defense on Wednesday, being the third defendant in the petition.
